Petrol Versus Diesel Engine

With the evolution of automotive technology the basic purpose of automobile engines, of converting energy into motion, has evolved. Today there are different types of automobile engines which use different means to serve the same purpose. The two main types of engine include the internal combustion engines and the external combustion engines.

The internal combustion engine is used in majority of the cars these days as it is easy to create motion from the chemical energy of the fuel. Most of these engines use gasoline as fuel to drive the car. The internal combustion engines can be further classified into different categories according to the number of piston strokes, type of fuel used and so forth. The four stroke engine is among the most widely used internal combustion automobile engine.

Diesel and Petrol Engines- The Differences

The diesel combustion engine and the petrol combustion engine are the two main varieties of automobile engines used in most of the vehicles today. Both these engines function on the same basis as it converts fuel into mechanical energy.

The main difference between these two engines is that in diesel engine, diesel oil is used as fuel where as in petrol engines, gasoline or petrol is used as fuel. The process of combustion is also different in these two engines. In diesel engines, no spark plug is used to start the ignition as the process is completed with the compression of air. The air in these engines is designed to reach a temperature, when it is compressed, to ignite when the fuel reaches the cylinder. This engine is quite heavy and therefore it is not suitable for light vehicles such as mopeds, scooters and so forth.

In the petrol engine, the process of combustion is quite different as a spark is used to start the ignition process. During the intake stage, both fuel and air are mixed and sucked into the cylinder. The spark plug creates a spark in the combustion chamber and this ignites the fuel.

Although these engines perform in a different manner with different fuel delivery systems, it produces the same end result of converting fuel into mechanical motion.
